Air compressors,
with air cooling or water cooling,
for industry, business,
medicine & research
The first thing that springs to mind when we think of compressed air and compressors is undoubtedly the service provided at petrol stations.
However, if we take a closer look and examine the possible applications in more detail, we are left with the question:
Where are compressed air and compressors used?
The answer reveals an incredible variety of applications.
Essentially, compressors are used in almost every sector of the economy. From trades and workshops, industry and manufacturing, the automotive sector, transport, aerospace, medical and dental technology, and energy generation and storage, right through to specialist applications such as the production of breathing air, and much more besides.

Medium-Pressure Compressors
for Industrial Applications
The industrial application range for medium pressure is up to 40 bar.
The JAB MD air compressors are designed for this purpose.
JAB recognised the growing demand for reliable air compressors in industry, business and research as early as the first half of the 20th century.
Today, medium-pressure compressors are used in a wide range of industries.
The company has consistently supported diversification in industrial applications.
This has led to increasingly powerful compressors and extensive expertise in pressure and material requirements, ensuring durable mediumpressure air compressors for industrial use.
An important point for users of medium-pressure air compressors is the standard product repertoire that has been created. JAB provides many basic performance variants.

Medium-Pressure Compressors
with Air Cooling or Water Cooling
Standard or customized?
Your project, your decision – we’re here to help.
Many of JABʼs medium-pressure compressors operate in some of the most remote corners of the
world.
They control and regulate functions in
- hydroelectric power plants,
- electrical substations, and
- power control systems.
They are used in both
- traditional and extended automotive applications, to
- purge hydroelectric turbines, and
- to start emergency power generators.
The versatility of JAB medium-pressure compressors matches the diversity of their applications.
The highly efficient air cooling system in JAB medium-pressure compressors ensures low intermediate and final temperatures.
But what happens to the dissipated energy?
A good question deserves a good, forwardthinking answer, which can be summed up in one keyword: Heat Recovery.
Talk to us about your future project.
Water-cooled medium-pressure compressors provide ideal control over the unit’s operating temperatures
and the gas temperature at the discharge unit.
In this context, it is not only the precise cooling capacity during continuous operation that is important, but also heat dissipation and the transfer of heat to building heating systems or industrial process systems.
This heat recovery significantly increases the system’s energy efficiency.
With properly configured recovery systems, up to 90% or more of the heat energy discharged by the compressor can be reused.
JAB medium pressure Booster
Boost your System.
With the JAB medium-pressure boosters, you can easily expand a low-pressure compressed air system
to meet production-specific medium-pressure requirements.
There are clear advantages to using JAB medium-pressure boosters.
Firstly, the company‘s existing low-pressure infrastructure is retained, and secondly, only areas requiring mediumpressure performance are brought up to these technical requirements. This means lower financial outlay for using medium-pressure. Technical measures are focused only on the demand zone.
In the long term, the use of JAB medium-pressure compressors in demand zones results in significant savings potential, as compressed air systems are prone to „leaks“ or compressed air loss due to a variety of influences. Even small and tiny leaks result in high energy consumption to keep the current air demand constant. When used specifically, JAB medium-pressure boosters reduce operating costs through increased efficiency.
JAB medium-pressure boosters are configured precisely to meet requirements and are supplied either as a stand-alone compressor or as a complete system, including control and monitoring modules.
Advantages of JAB boosters:
- Existing low-pressure air network remains intact
- Variable medium pressure air demand can be temporarily accessed
- Compressed air system can be divided into sections and permanently based on low-pressure basic supply
- Reduced risk of air diffusion
- Operating cost reduction
- Temporary, stationary medium-pressure air supply according to the production plant requirements

High-Pressure Air Compressors
Used worldwide in many industrial and technical applications.
J. A. Becker high-pressure compressors impress users worldwide with their advanced and continuously developed technology, ensuring safety, reliability, and efficiency.
A common question might be: What do divers, firefighters, and astronauts have in common?
The answer: they all require breathing air. Highpressure air compressors make this possible.
Beyond these specialized professions, many industrial sectors benefit from JAB highpressure air compressors.
Industries such as
- oil & gas,
- chemical processing,
- steel manufacturing,
- mechanical engineering, and
- aerospace
rely on JAB compressors for pressure tests up to 500 bar.
No Compromises on Working Pressures up to 500 bar.
J. A. Becker & Söhne places great emphasis on ideal material selection for each application, based on over 100 years of compressor manufacturing experience.
This commitment to quality ensures highperformance and durable high-pressure air compressors.
High performance in the high working air pressure range also places high demands on the entire system and infrastructure.
This is where high-pressure air projects benefit from extensive JAB know-how.

Just hot air?
How do the
JAB air compressors differ?
Not all compressed air is the same—it all depends on how it’s used.
DThe challenges associated with compressed air supply are as varied as the applications themselves.
We know from experience that the requirements for the quality of the compressed air supply vary enormously.
To get a clear picture of this broad field, it is helpful to compare two representative areas of application.
Let’s take compressed air, which is used for power transmission, regulation, and control via pneumatic control units in energy supply systems
and for supplying people with breathing air. In both cases, the medium is air.
The basic parameters of pressure and flow rate play a crucial role.
However, compressed air must meet quality requirements that go far beyond these parameters.
So, for every project, we need to ask ourselves the following questions:
What qualities are expected of the compressed air to be produced?
Pressure and volumeflow rate are the first things that come to mind, and they’re actually easy to define.
What other compressed air qualities play a crucial role?
In addition to compressed air temperature, key factors in configuring a compressor system include air constituents such as moisture, oil mist, and particles.
These factors may include both controlled and uncontrolled variables, as well as contaminants. Control of these factors—both on the intake side and on the compressed air outlet side—is therefore taken into account during configuration to meet your specific needs.
The attention to detail and the expertise of our engineers in JAB compressors and JAB compressor systems ensure the quality of your compressed air and our compressors in the medium- and high-pressure ranges. Our medium-pressure compressors, medium-pressure boosters, and high-pressure compressors set the standard with a comprehensive range of capabilities.
JAB’s extensive standard product portfolio, along with its OEM and custom compressor models and compressor systems, offers solutions for compressed air requirements across a wide range of applications, with air delivery rates of up to 11,000 l/min per compressor and pressures of up to 500 bar.

The question is,
why are JAB compressors manufactured in both air-cooled and water-cooled versions?
One possible answer is this:
The type of cooling is determined by the capacity—that is, by both the pressure requirement and the flow rate.
Another factor is the environment, which includes weather, climate, and the availability of cooling water or cooling air.
Basically, there is no simple answer to the question of whether to choose air-cooled or water-cooled systems. This is because, in specific cases, the decision can be influenced by complex factors. For this reason, JAB in particular has consulting specialists for compressors and compressor systems.
However, the purpose of the cooling system can be defined. On the one hand, the compressor units are to be maintained in ideal operating condition; on the other hand, the cooling system is designed to ensure that the compressed air outlet temperature does not exceed 15 Kelvin above the ambient air temperature.
In water-cooled compressors, the cooling function gives rise to an interesting feature: heat recovery. In this process, the waste heat is used for heating purposes.
