JAB Compressors – Hidden Champions …
… or why we build our compressors and compressor systems to be so robust.
J. A. Becker compressors are used all over the world, and since no two regions are alike, the climatic requirements and environmental conditions vary just as much as the locations where they are used.
For our design engineers, this means adapting to ambient temperatures ranging from -25°C to +55°C—depending on the location—during the design and manufacturing phases, and taking into account the conditions of polar regions, desert areas, the tropics, coastal areas, and so on.
As if these parameters weren’t enough, local conditions determine whether our compressor systems are enclosed in soundproof housings, spend their days tucked away in a dark corner as “hidden champions,” or simply have to deliver their reliable performance out in the open, exposed to the elements.
OEM compressor systems
and custom solutions.
Our customers have access to a wide range of standard components for their custom JAB compressor projects, as well as a correspondingly extensive in-house manufacturing capability. This combination of a “modular compressor system” and in-house manufacturing capability reflects our more than 85 years of experience in compressor manufacturing.
Over the past 85 years, J. A. Becker has built up extensive and complex expertise, which continues to evolve and steadily expand the “compressor modular system.”
The JAB modular compressor system allows you to configure a custom compressor tailored to your specific needs or a “turnkey” plug-and-play compressor system. Our engineers are continuously expanding the modular system with the latest features to enable the development of new and cutting-edge compressors and compressor systems for a wide range of sectors, from business and industry to research, medical technology, and high-tech applications, among others.
JAB’s vertical integration and the expertise of its compressor engineers enable the creation of custom-designed assemblies, compressors, and compressor systems that utilize tailored material combinations and specific technologies to address the challenges posed by application requirements and environmental conditions.
With over 85 years of experience, the expertise of our JAB compressor engineers in materials and technology, and JAB’s extensive in-house manufacturing capabilities, it goes without saying that we can manufacture custom compressor solutions tailored precisely to your needs—solutions that will supply your facilities with compressed air for decades and scale to meet your evolving requirements.
JAB „Water Buffalo“
The highly versatile workhorse among JAB compressors with targeted water cooling for the intermediate and aftercoolers.
Features and Benefits:
- Ideal for compressing air and inert gases (e.g., nitrogen), as well as natural gas or biogas in the medium and highpressure range
- Compact and pressure-resistant crankcase to accommodate internal gas forces
- Pressure-resistant oil tank for low oil consumption
- Targeted water cooling of the intermediate and aftercoolers
- Installation also possible in challenging space and ambient temperature conditions
The JAB water buffalo compressor serves as the central compressor unit in a complete compressor system housed in a container with an external control unit.
- Plasma nitrided and honed cylinder surfaces combined with special piston rings and optimal lubrication properties ensure long maintenance intervals and low blow-by losses
- No need for oil refilling between maintenance intervals
- Motor and compressor block are connected via an elastic coupling
JAB “Water Buffalo” compressor used as a natural gas backflush unit to increase natural gas production.
Mobile, high volume flow capacity, high compression pressure
The Task:
- Mobility of the compressor for quick deployment at changing locations.
- Compressor unit with high volume flow capacity at high compression pressure.
The Solution:
- Lightweight design – following the „reduced to the max“ philosophy – for lower transport and trailer weight.
- Quick-change transport lock.
- Star-delta starting circuit and speed control for low start-up current requirements.
- Flexible inlet pressure: It can be low or high depending on the conditions on-site.
JAB Compressors suitable for coastal use
Sometimes you just need a Custom Development.
Compressor with “Marine Coating”
JAB compressors are configured according to their intended application.
In addition to the materials used, the compressor units receive their specific finish through painting. The purpose of surface finishing by painting—for example, in compressors for flammable gases—is to dissipate static charge.
A typical requirement for the paint finish on compressors used near the sea is corrosion resistance. The marine paint finish on marine compressors is applied in accordance with corrosivity category C5 as defined in DIN EN ISO 129442.
Class C5 is one of the highest protective coating classes and is a prerequisite for using the compressors in environments subject to chemically aggressive conditions, such as heavily polluted industrial areas or coastal regions with high exposure to saltwater.
It would essentially be a standard product were it not for its location near the sea.
What we, as visitors to the seaside, perceive as a relaxing atmosphere and describe as ‘wonderful sea air’ is, for most products, the cause of rapid deterioration due to corrosion.
So it’s no wonder that, when using our compressors near the sea, we gave some thought to how we could protect them from the salty sea air and sea spray.
As simple as the solution of ‘Marine Coating’ may sound, it becomes increasingly complex when applied to a wide variety of components and assemblies.
In addition to the special paint finish, special seawater-resistant seals and sealing components must also be used. Last but not least, dryers and separators are required on the intake side to protect the internal components from the salty sea air.
Evacuation of leaked gas, blow-by gas, recirculation to the main compressor
The Task:
Assist function for large combustion gas compressors to evacuate leakage gas from collection containers and return it to the main compression cycle.
The Solution:
- Plug-and-play complete system for stop-and-go operation.
- Fine-tuned components for long maintenance intervals.
- Monitoring of operating states.
How do JAB compressors differ?
No two gases are alike. It’s a truism, but one that holds a lot of weight upon closer inspection. That’s because the physical and chemical properties of different gases couldn’t be more varied. Compressors must be specifically configured for each gas to account for these properties. That’s why no two compressors are alike.
The challenges involved in compressing gases are as diverse as the applications themselves.
The physicochemical properties—whether flammable, reactive, oxidizing, unreactive, or inert—place demands on the compressor configuration in terms of material selection and technical requirements.
Technical principles that set the standard for compressed air appear in a very different light when applied to hydrogen, the highly reactive energy source of the future. The compression of carbon dioxide, in turn, follows yet another set of rules.
For these reasons, JAB compressors and compressor units are manufactured from a wide variety of materials and in a wide range of technical configurations. Pistons, bores, shaft seals, non-contact drives, etc., as well as cooling and filter units, play different roles in each compressor depending on the specific gas being compressed.
For specialists, the parameters and properties of the gases they use are clear. J.A. Becker und Söhne’s expertise regarding the wide variety and properties of gases is a testament to its experience with a diverse range of gaseous media.
The key question regarding the compression of air, hydrogen, inert gases, and process gases is: What gas qualities, purities, and pressures are required by industry, business, and science?
Key factors in the configuration of the compressor system, based on the physicochemical properties described above, also include gas temperatures, pressure behavior, and gas expansion behavior, as well as the expected particle density and other specific gas factors.
Therefore, in addition to pressure and flow rate, the control of these factors on both the suction and discharge sides forms the basis for compressor peripheral system design.
JAB’s extensive standard product portfolio, along with its OEM and custom compressor models and compressor systems, offers solutions for gas pressure requirements across a wide range of applications, with flow rates of up to 66,800 l/min per compressor and pressures of up to 500 bar.
